While people are still wondering if the actual Oscar ceremony will take place this year, the Academy finally released the nominations. As wildly angry as I usually get about the Academy Awards, I have to say, I’m not that upset this year.
Good things about the nominations:
-
There Will Be Blood got several, including Best Actor, Director, Screenplay and Picture
-
Oscar voters apparently had memories this year and nominated films like Michael Clayton, Eastern Promises, In The Valley of Elah, Gone Baby Gone and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
-
“Falling Slowly” from Once nominated for Best Song
-
Ratatouille!
Bad things about the nominations:
-
Across the Universe was nominated for Best Costume Design
-
Norbit was nominated for Best Makeup (imagine this film having “Oscar Winner” attached to it)
-
Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood not nominated for Best Score for There Will Be Blood
-
No love for Superbad or The Host (I’m serious)
-
There’s always one nominated director that doesn’t get a Best Picture nomination. This year, that’s Julian Schnabel
Next up: Oscar predictions.
